Fire sign Martyn Gray from Oxford City Stars

Cardiff Fire are delighted to announce the acquisition of 26 year old Martyn Gray from Oxford City Stars. Martyn was born in Wales and started his early junior career in Cardiff before moving on to Swindon where he spent the next 5 seasons playing U16’s and U18’s in NIHL Divisions 1 and 2. Following his 5 years in Swindon Martyn moved North to Sheffield where he signed for the Sheffield Senators in NHL North playing in 112 league games. In the 2016/17 season Martyn returned south and signed for the Bracknell Hornets in NIHL1 before spending the 2017/18 and 2018/19 season with the Oxford City Stars winning the NIHL2 South league title.

Martyn also represented GB universities in the Universiade games in the 2013/14 season and represented Oxford University in the 2017/18 season.

Head Coach Mark Cuddihy added:

I’m delighted to be able to bring Martyn back to Cardiff. I’ve admired his game for a long time. He is a neat and tidy defenceman that makes good, calm decisions. I worked briefly with Martyn in the NIHL select team against the Basingstoke Bison a couple of years ago and he handled himself brilliantly in that game. I spoke to him afterwards and he said it was always his intention to return home in the future. So I was delighted when he agreed to sign with the Fire this season.

Despite his relatively young age of 26, Martyn has played in 244 senior games since a very young age so he ticks a number of boxes for us with where we’re trying to take the club over the next couple of years.
