Cardiff Fire are thrilled to announce another new face to the Cardiff Fire with Defenceman Alex Symonds joining for the new campaign.
Cardiff born Symonds started his career in the Capital with the junior programme before making his Elite League debut during the 2005 season as a 16/17 year old. The following season Alex played 38 times for the Cardiff Devils and also represented Swindon Wildcats in the EPL 10 times. Alex helped the Cardiff Devils to lift the EIHL cup and the EIHL KO cup during that season.
The 2007/08 season saw Alex sign a one way contract for the Cardiff Devils playing 51 times. It was also this season Alex was called up to the GB under 20’s team playing 5 games in the world championships for his country.
Alex left for Telford Tigers the following season before returning to Cardiff again to lace them up for the Devils in 09/10. Alex remained with the Elite league team the following season and became one of the ‘record breakers’ for the number of pro games won in a row. Alex was to enjoy further success during the 11/12 season, this time with the Slough Jets in the EPL wining EPL playoffs.
The following 4 seasons Alex split his time between Swindon Wildcats and Basingstoke Bison in the EPL becoming a much sought after defenceman in the league, playing over 150 times and helping the Bison to the league title in 2015/16
Mark Cuddihy continued “This is a big big signing for us. Ive known Alex for a while but i’ve never worked with him directly, he’s always been in the Elite set up straight from juniors or playing key roles in the EPL and therefore out of our reach. I’ve always hoped that one day he would sign with us and the new 2nd tier has allowed us to pursue him. He was right up there on the list of players I wanted following our promotion and i’m absolutely delighted he’s agreed to sign for us.
He’s one of those guys that competes hard every single night and gives the team the chance to win hockey games. He will play a huge roll for us next season and he’s excited about the opportunity of that responsibility. He will help the team and our younger players immensely. I’m proud that Cardiff Fire has been able to sign a player of Alex’s calibre and with over 200 games at the highest level in this country and 276 EPL games the experience attached with Alex in a big coup for us”
Welcome to the Fire Symo!!!
