Fire sign GB player Jordan Lawday from North American team Ogden Mustangs

Cardiff fire are delighted to announce that 19 year old Jordan Lawday will sign for the remainder of the 2017/18 season.

Basingstoke goalie Jordan Lawday began his junior career with the Basingstoke junior club progressing on to the the NIHL team at the age of just 16, playing in 9 games with a 91.9% save percentage.  Lawday continued playing U18, U20 and NIHL with the Basingstoke club with all his stats being plus 90% earning himself a call-up to the GB U18 national team and playing in the world championships as starting net minder.

The following season (2016/17) Jordan Headed to the US to progress his hockey career signing for the Soo Indians U18’s in Michigan, again with stats north of 90% playing in 22 games for the American outfit. Jordon started this season with The Ogden Mustangs of the Western States Hockey League (WSHL) in Utah before deciding that a return back to the UK and Cardiff Fire would benefit his career.

Mark Cuddihy continued “I have long been an admirer of Jordan. Jordan was actually to blame for the first ever Cardiff Fire loss, we had 55 shots on him but only managed 2 goals. I did remind him of that in a phone call earlier this week, we aren’t going to forgive him for that but we are really happy to have him with us now.  Jordon is an outstanding goalie. He will undoubtedly join up with team GB 20’s this season and I’d bet on him being the starter.

I believe at the club now we have the best two junior goalies in the UK with Lewis Davies and Jordan. Who both should play a part in U18’s and U20’s GB teams. That is great for us as a club. We add them to the experience of Joe Myers, Luke Takel and the up and coming James Whiting we have a perfect mix of goaltending over the two NIHL Fire teams. Jordans availability couldn’t have come a better time for us with Takel and Joe Myers being out of action and James Whitting also breaking his ankle recently. It left us with just one goalie over the two teams so I as soon as I knew a move back home for Jordan was on the cards we jumped at it. I’m delighted to have him with us”
