Cardiff v Basingstoke Match report

Cardiff Fire entertained the Buffalo for the final time in the league this season. The previous 3 games had been very close affairs with the Fire wining 2 games 3-0 and 4-3 and the Buffalo spoiling the Fire’s opening weekend taking the game 3-2.

The game started fantastically for the Fire as we took the lead after just 1 min 22 secs of the first period. Alan Armour sending David Sadler on a breakaway, with Sadler shooting low glove side beating Lawday to put the home team in front.

A further goal from Jordon Powell assisted by Robert Sedlak and Andrew Davies made it 2-0 to the Fire and we seemed to be away. Referee Nathan Ormound was taken to hospital with a suspected broken foot after being hit by a puck and a referee was used from the junior game that had finished on the smaller pad. This change of referee changed the flow and speed of the game considerably. Buffalo clawed a goal back, sloppy play on the power play lead to a giveaway that sent Mathew Lawday on a break away for a shorthanded goal. Period ended 2-1 to the Fire.

The third period started with a bang for the Buffalo with just 17 secs of the period gone Ryan Sutton tied the game. Fire ran into penalty trouble and couldn’t get going. As the game ended Goal scorer Ryan sutton shot the puck at the Cardiff goal after the final whistle that lead to a few scuffles with James Manson and Mathew Lawday dropping the gloves. Fire outshot the Buffalo 39-28 but couldn’t get a winner. Game ended 2-2

The draw keeps Fire top of the table and need to win 3 of the remaining 5 games to win the league title.
