Cardiff Fire will retire the number 44 jersey worn by Alexander Madge. Madge received a life changing injury while playing for Cardiff Fire last season. A freak accident on the ice led to multiple breaks of his leg. He has had numerous operations since the incident and there are more to follow. A few months ago he underwent emergency surgery to save his leg.
Alex started playing hockey in Cardiff at a very young age. He played through all the age groups form under 10’s right up to senior hockey playing 117 senior games. As a player he was as comfortable in D as on the wing and he didn’t care where he played as long as he was helping the team.
Everyone at Cardiff Fire is routing for Alex, he’s still present at training sessions and will remain within the Fire Family. We still hope one day he returns to the ice but that’s a long way off.
Mark Cuddihy continued “This is the right thing to do, I feel Madgey will be involved with us for some time, I was asked by a new player this season if they could wear 44, immediately I thought ‘no chance’ and this just made sense.
I hope one day he puts it on again but only Madgey will wear #44 for Cardiff Fire. I ran it past some of the guys and everyone felt it was the right thing to do. Madgey joined the Fire from the start and was fantastic on and off the ice for us. He’s still a big part of our club and I’m sure he will remain with us for a long time”
